Sexual promiscuity: The double standard
Posted on: November 30, 2007 at 2:36 pm (9 months, 1 week ago)

Skank. Slut. Whore. Those are just a few of the words heard when referring to a promiscuous girl. Those words are said by both males and females alike. However, when a guy is promiscuous, it is shrugged off, or he gains positive attention from it.

For males, it seems that how many people they have sex with determines how big of a stud they are. For females, how many people they sleep with determines how little respect they have for themselves. I strongly dislike promiscuity. I don't care if it is among males or females. If you are a promiscuous female, I will think you have no respect for yourself. If you are a promiscuous male, I will think you are a coward who is afraid of commitment. Either way, it is not about how much I dislike promiscuity, or how much one person may like it. It is the fact that male and female counterparts are treated in such an opposite manner. What makes a man so special that he can sleep with fifty women with no social consequences, yet women who sleep with five partners gain a bad reputation?

I believe that this double standard comes from the fact that women are considered to be more classy, while this type of behavior is expected from men. Even so, they should be treated equal in this situation. Think about sexually transmitted diseases. They are spread every day from this type of sexual behavior. A man can give a woman a disease just as quick as a woman could give a man a disease. If you consider a girl to be disgusting for sleeping with a random guy, then consider the guy to be disgusting too. There is no reason that this sexual behavior should be more accepting of one particular gender over the other one.

I agree: the double standard is foolish and sexist. It shouldn't exist. If you're going to criticize a woman for sleeping around, you can't turn it around and say that a man can do it without being called a whore. I, for one, don't really care if people have lots of sex. Sex is pleasure and if it feels good, why not do it a lot?

I just think people should exercise more caution when it comes to safe sex practises, seeing as so many people could have STIs and not even know it. If you're going to have a lot of sex, do it safely.

I completely agree, however, it doesn't surprise me anymore. In this sexist society nothing impresses me anymore. I blame religion. Specially those that took St. Augustine words for gold. He was a misogynistic rat. The Christian bible is also to blame for. I don't even want to get started on this :P

This entry reminded me of a lyrics from Can't Hold Us Down by Christina Aguilera
''heres something i just cant understand
if a guy have 3 girls then hes the man
he can even give her some head or sex her off
but if a girl do the same then shes a whore"
I'm not really a Christina fan, but this just popped into my head :)

But yeah, I completely agree - the double standards to do with sex is ridiculous.

I agree with you here. It's horrible that those types of words are even used describing women, never mind a woman who is confident with her sexuality. It's sad that men have these certain "privileges" that if a woman ever started to enjoy, we automatically get labeled negatively.

I think it also stems from the fact that women can get pregnant and it shows, women are the ones who get entered into. Society puts women on this pedestal with all of these expectations to fulfill, only to knock us down if a woman doesn't conform. Ack…I can't even begin to explain how much I hate this double standard.

I couldn't have said it better. I hate the double standard. A guy who sleeps around is just as much of a whore as a girl who sleeps around!

Oooh I'm with Lene about blaming religion. Instead of being open and safe, girls are secretive and keep their sexuality in the closet.

But I don't completely agree. I know that you personally only have sex with those you LOVE, and I am the same way. I think most girls have an emotional connection to sex, so it's thought of as slutty for a girl to have sex for other reasons. I have had promiscuous friends and most of the time they expressed guilty about their one-night stands.

I do think it is a man's instinct to procreate, and I also think that it's easier for a man to stick his penis in a girl than it is for a woman to let a man inside her.

I don't think sleeping around is whorey if you are safe and just want a good time. I think a girl is a slut when she can't resist having sex with people just to prove she's attractive.

Interesting post, and definitely an issue.

I don't really see the double standard.

In my experiences: Regardless of your gender, you're going to be looked down on if you sleep around.

So.
Don't know if I can relate, but I commented anyway :P

Ya, your really right. If a male or female pertain in those same acts, than they should both be treated the same way.

I totally agree with you! You couldn't have said it any better. :)

I used to be promiscuous. Had a lot of consequences that I never really thought about. =( Fortunately it wasn't too late, yay. But I agree about that double standard, since I've been deemed a whore by a few people because I messed around, yet the guys that I did mess around with received no labeling at all. Wasn't fair to me. ;_; But oh well…

Double standards in ANYTHING is bad and insulting, whether it's regarding sexuality or not.

I've said the same thing many, many times. I think it's a rights issue–Women still aren't thought to be the same as men, which can be a good thing, but in any situation, it shouldn't be treated as such. Good post.

I don't like promiscuity either; men and women should be treated equally when it comes to it. I personally feel sorry for "studs" - they obviously have no idea of what a relationship is supposed to be like.

Paula - 12.01.07 @ 12:09 pm (9 months, 1 week ago)

I agree with you, I don't get why women are treated different when both, women and men, are doing the same things.

Genesis - 12.01.07 @ 1:19 pm (9 months, 1 week ago)

It is no fair at all. We've made some advancements as women, but there's still so far to go. I think everyone should carry themselves with a certain amount of class, male or female.

First off, I really like this winter theme. The colors are very nice! :)

I agree with you…but this double standard is never going to change, I think. Men are naturally considered to be "dogs" with uncontrollable sex drives, and that's supposed to be "normal". If a women has a large sex drive, and she acts on it instead of restraining herself, it's considered slutty and trashy. It isn't fair. Most average women enjoy sex and want sex as much as men do, but we are taught we have to control that urge and be "good girls", whereas it's like guys get a good pat on the back for being lucky enough to get laid all the time. It's disgusting!

If you're really interested in the subject, there is a FABULOUS book that I read awhile ago that expresses my sentiments on the topic really eloquently. I posted a few excerpts here: http://loomy.tumblr.com/post/12785154

You know, you're totally right, but it's a feature of how our society looks at men, women and sex. But it has other imbalanced side-effects entirely the other way round, too…

Here's an example: when a hot, suave, 35 year old man seduces and sleeps with a 15 year old girl he (quite rightly) gets sent to jail for 20 years. When a hot, sophisticated 35 year old woman sleeps with a 15 year old boy, everyone thinks the boy got lucky and the woman gets a 6 month suspended sentence (both of these cases were in the news in the last 6 months).

So society has double standards, and it works out for women in some instances and men in others. I don't think it'll ever be fair, because we just don't look at men and women in the same light.

This remains me of "Cruel Intentions" because of Sarah Michelle Geller's character. Though I agree and it is not fair that women are seen this way for doing the same thing that man do. Woah. Society and it's annoying double standards but that's part of life.

You make it sound as though every person who enjoys casual sex sleeps around with no protection and just hops in the sack with people.
